Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival in Trevelez

After arriving at Malaga airport, we'll be transferred to Trevélez, one of Spain's highest villages. Situated at approximately 1,476 meters above sea level, this charming mountain village offers impressive views of the surrounding peaks and valleys of the Sierra Nevada. Its high altitude fosters a fresh and pristine climate that has significantly shaped the village's daily life, culture, and economy.

Trevélez boasts a rich history dating back to the Moorish period. The narrow, winding streets and whitewashed houses still evoke that era. The inhabitants keep their traditions and crafts alive, including the characteristic architecture and agricultural practices of the Alpujarras. We'll take time to explore the village and enjoy delicious tapas and the famous jamón serrano, for which Trevélez is renowned.

We stay in hotel La Fragua II

Day 2: Lobrás - Trevelez

Accommodation: second night in Hotel La Fragua

Distance: 14,7 km

Description:

A transfer (35min) takes us to the village of Lobrás. Following the GR7, this itinerary takes us through the lesser-known part of the Alpujarras. We slowly climb in high plains to the villages of Timar and Juviles, where few people live. We have spectacular views over the canyon below, the high mountains of the Sierra Nevada and the white villages nestled against the mountain flanks. After 8 km of climbing, we descend through  lush forest towards the village of Trevelez.

We leave Trevélez via the GR7 trail. An easy climb through pine forests and open meadows quickly brings us above the village, and soon we are surrounded by high mountain plains and stunning views of the high Alpujarras region. After a 5 km easy climb, we descend along a beautiful path through a magnificent oak forest, and after 14 km of walking, we arrive at Busquistar. From here, we descend further to the villages of Ferreirola and Fondales. A final short climb back to the hotel where we can enjoy a well-deserved rest!

Day 4: Mecina Fondales: a circular walk along the villages of Taha

Distance: 13.4 km / +727 m / -690 m
Accommodation: Second night at Hotel de Mecina
Description: The old path descends to the impressive gorge, which we cross via an old bridge. The stone path now climbs along the other side of the gorge, offering beautiful views of the villages. The narrow path joins a wide path that gradually climbs to an old farmhouse, where we take the narrow path that descends back to the gorge. We arrive in Ferreirola, a smaller and even more remote village known for its peaceful atmosphere and traditional architecture. From Ferreirola, we continue through lush nature to our hotel in Mecina.

Day 5: Mecina Fondales – Capileira

Accommodation: Hotel Los Llanos
Distance: 8.9 km / +821m / -408m

We arrive at an old stone barn where the path continues to climb until we reach an old canal. We follow the canal until we descend again and enter the gorge. The path becomes more rugged and we cross the river a few times. After a final climb, we arrive back in Capileira.
